![]() ![]() Consequently, Honda did not have the opportunity to further develop the machine, as the industry shifted its direction towards four-wheelers. Due to the 1988 Consent Decree (or ATC ban), it only lasted in the market for two years before its demise. However, it turned out to be more of a sport machine than a racer. Honda engineers had racing in mind during the design process of the trike. Introduced in 1985, the Honda 350X launched during the height of the ATC craze, alongside other revolutionary machines – and had a lot of promise. The Honda 350X ATC is 9th in the line of all-terrain cycles and the 3rd generation of Big Reds released by Japanese manufacturer Honda. But if you are not quite convinced, this guide will enlighten you on the huge influence this three-wheeler had on present-day utility vehicles. Savvy aficionados would undoubtedly agree. Despite its inability to execute fancy stunts and jumps and its need for body English to unleash its potential, the 350X was a standout, nonetheless. But no period is too short for something as great as this bike. The Honda 350X was only in the off-roading limelight for two years. It was the penultimate installment to the legendary Big Red series – a lineup of performance-built trikes designed for aggressive trails and racetracks. Produced from 1985 to 1986, the Honda 350X ATC (Big Red 350) featured crisp brakes, grippy tires, and a powerful 350-cc mid-range motor. ![]() Given its racing lineage and prestige, it would be fascinating to know what this reputable vehicle has to offer. ![]() This head-turner is not only a serious trail machine but also included in the illustrious Big Red bikes – a part of Honda’s sport ATC lineup that began in the ‘70s. Last I knew Supertrapp quit making 350x mufflers, but I could be mistaken so do a little digging and see if they are making them or not.Disclosure: We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.Ī true off-roading enthusiast would undoubtedly recognize the Honda 350X ATC as the archetype of modern-day utility vehicles but with three wheels instead of four. Another option is to look for a used Supertrapp muffler and couple that with a good used OEM header pipe. Both are very loud, but the DG is more bearable to me than the Cobra setup. Both offer complete systems with header pipe and muffler. Once you make it, post a WTB ad up there, someone on here is likely to have what you need in that department.Įxhaust: There are currently two options for complete systems, they are DG and Cobra. Once you make it through the probationary period for new members here, you will gain access to our classifieds forums. Rear brakes: Keep an eye on ebay and other used parts sources. And I am certain that having a machine shop recondition a 350x head and rocker box for bad cam journals is quite an expensive venture it it's even feasible to do. They don't make 350x heads any more, all we have are used parts these days, so once they're gone, they're gone. If you run oil that is extremely old and dirty or run it very low our out, the upper valve-train (cam journals particularly) are usually the first to suffer damage. The cam in a 350x rides directly in journals machined into the aluminum cylinder head and rocker box. Keep the oil changed on a good regular interval and don't run it low. Be nice to that 350x engine, particularly the cylinder head. If a valve adjustment doesn't quiet things down, then it is time to start looking for worn/damaged valve-train components. Valve clearance is relatively easy to do, costs nothing and is the most likely cause of your noisy valve-train. I would definitely check your valve clearances first before jumping right to a cam chain issue. But I am just one man so keep that in mind. In my experience the Honda cam chain tensioners are very reliable, I have never experienced a failure with one. A couple of possible reasons for a noisy cam chain are a defective/broken tensioner, or a chain that is stretched out of spec beyond the tensioner's ability to keep it tight. The cam chain tensioner on the 350x is automatic. ![]()
