During my three weeks of instruction, I participated in a group tour of the Abastos market, a dinner at a local restaurant, a cooking class, and a Christmas posada celebration (the last two took place in the school's spacious courtyard). In addition to the regular classes, the school also offered a variety of extracurricular activities. ![]() If I ever struggled to understand a concept, his explanations were always clear and easy to follow in either language. He was proficient in both English and Spanish, and his command of grammar principles in both languages was excellent. My teacher was well-prepared every day with an exercise, and made sure to include a significant amount of formal teaching. We had engaging conversations (mostly in Spanish) about various topics such as local politics and history, the diverse indigenous population, Oaxaca's rich cultural celebrations, and more. My teacher quickly understood this and allowed me to focus on general discussion rather than just rote exercises. The final week, Juan Carlos and I walked the city, visited museums, discussed books in the library, and just talked and end enjoyed being out of the classroom. In my lessons I got a balance of grammar intertwined with the conversation, plus a lot of important cultural and historical education. Some days the flow comes easier than others, but HOLA is there with you wherever you are at. Now it is all about the practice, and just speaking. Now it is, not in great depth, yet, but at least I can get by and have a solid foundation, thanks to Juan Carlos and HLS. ![]() I did have some vocabulary when I first arrived, and I could understand a little but having a conversation was not on the cards.
